I have really enjoyed this musculo prac and thank god for that really because it's what I thought I'd enjoy. It's amazing how much I have learnt and was able to consolidate, but at the same time you feel like there is so much more that you still don't know. This thought tends to freak you out a bit... However! I have come to a very important conclusion this week as an almost new grad! It's what you do know and the fact that you know what you don't know and that you know that you will know it...eventually. If that makes any sense. So, what I'm trying to get across on this Sunday night before I have another week of energy draining learning and consolidating is that we must have faith in ourselves and know that no one knows it all and that soon we'll know some more.

I agree with you Nicky that there is so much more to learn. I suppose the balance we need to strikle with patients is exuding confidence, but at the same time acknowledging that there is much knowlege to be gained. I believe that humility will lead to greater learning and ultimately be better health practitioners. Knowing the students of our GEM group, I think most us are pretty humble. At the same time, we appear fairly confident....I guess we are all going to make pretty darn good physios (I am just padding ourselves on the back since we are near the finish line.)
Hi Nic,
I feel a bit the same, after just having finished my musculo placement at charlies. But isn't this the way it usually goes: the more you know, the more you realize what you don't know. I think we know a tiny bit of all the areas of physiotherapy and the great thing about this is that we can go out and learn more. Knowing that we know enough to provide any patient with a treatment - it might not be the best treatment the patient could have received on that day. But with our clinical reasoning skills and assessment/reassessment we've got the tools to provide effective treatment.

Good post Nic, today was my first day at musclu prac. Like you, i really enjoy this area and hope to learn alot. Its true that as students we have so much to learn, but thats what makes physio such an enjoyable profession, theres always something new to know. Ive heard from other physios that they didnt feel totally "armed" to deal with whatever patient presented themselves until they were at least 5 years out of school.
I just started where you were Nic, and I got the same sort of feeling. I think that we just have to understand that as new grads we'll know enough to treat any patient at a basic level, and get them better. But what we lack are the little tricks of the trade, and the special knowledge to progress a patient quicker than basic treatment plan. So be confident my fellow physios that we have enough knowledge to treat any patient on a first visit. And that we also have enough knowledge to locate the research articles to make the second visit the the best follow up ever.
Well done Team Physio, University is about learning to be responsible for your own learning (as you know) and you are demonstrating that you are ready to practicing this, regards
Steph
